Mingface, voluit Mingface Creations B.V., was een zelfstandig opererend fairtrade mode en designmerk uit Amsterdam opgericht in januari 2004 door de Chinees-Nederlandse Sebastiaan Duong (Nijmegen, 1971) en heeft tot circa 2019 bestaan. Op 12 oktober 2004 stond het bedrijf officieel ingeschreven bij de Kamer van Koophandel.[1] Het merk startte met de verkoop van T-shirts met daarop Mingface, een gestileerde schoolfoto van de oprichter Duong met een geel gezicht (verwijzend naar de Chinese achtergrond van Duong). In 1995 studeerde Duong af aan de Akademie voor Kunst en Vormgeving in Den Bosch met een serie gezeefdrukte zelfportretten. Zeker in het begin werd vooral verkocht op de Noordermarkt in Amsterdam, op de zaterdag.[2][3][4][5]
Later kwam Mingface met een lijn met gestilleerde dierenhoofden op kleding en vintage kleding. Deze collectie was geinspireerd op de liefde voor dieren van Duong.[6] Het verhaal achter het merk: Mingface houdt van reizen en tijdens die reizen komt hij dieren tegen uit de Chinese Dierenriem. De producten van Mingface, waaronder ansichtkaarten vertellen het verhaal van hem en/of de dieren op zijn reis.[7] Duong startte Mingface om een manier te vinden te financieren waar hij van houdt, reizen. Tegelijk wilde hij delen in zijn plezier voor reizen. [8]
Samenwerking Coolpuk
In mei 2012 ging Duong een samenwerking aan met illustrator Coolpuk (Puk Fenneman (Hoorn, 1974)).[9] Fenneman studeerde tot 1996 aan het Grafisch Lyceum te Amsterdam. Samen brachten Duong en Fenneman een serie ansichtkaarten uit waarop de hiervoor beschreven dieren te zien zijn. In september 2019 eindigde de samenwerking.[10][11][12] In korte tijd groeide Mingface met illustrator Coolpuk uit tot een veel geziene en gewilde ansichtkaartenuitgever, blijkt ook uit de diverse opdrachten van instellingen die ze kregen.
De activiteiten van Mingface zijn voortgezet onder het nieuwe bedrijf van Sebastiaan Duong en Puk Fenneman, Orange Panda. Dit bedrijf werd opgericht om producten Mingface en Coolpuk samen centraal te kunnen aanbieden. Mingface is binnen Orange Panda een merk.[13]
Mingface bracht 56 wenskaarten op de markt in samenwerking met PaperClipCards in 2016.[14]
Mingface werkte veel samen met Koopmans' drukkerij uit Hoorn.[15]

Verhaallijnen
Modern onderzoek: De uitgever Mingface, de illustrator Coolpuk en de personen achter de aliassen maken veelvuldig gebruik van social media. Zoals de ansichtkaarten verkocht worden in de winkels, ontbreekt daarbij achtergrondinformatie van uitgever en ontwerper. Wat werd er met een afbeelding bedoeld bijvoorbeeld. Die informatie is vaak wel te vinden bij aankondiging van een nieuwe kaart op bijvoorbeeld Facebook. Ook blijkt in het algemeen dat de diverse sociale mediakanalen veel achtergrondinformatie kunnen verschaffen. Daarnaast wordt op sociale media meer het volledige oeuvre getoond dan op de verkoopsites. Dat komt doordat specifieke kaarten bijvoorbeeld alleen ter promotie waren of in opdracht werden uitgegeven en alleen verkrijgbaar bij opdrachtgever. Verder is waardevol dat een behoorlijk nauwkeurige datering aangehouden kan worden.
Aan de hand van de tabel van de ansichtkaarten kun je verhaallijnen destilleren uit de kaarten. Dat maakt het interpreteren van de kaarten een stuk rijker aan informatie. Hiermee volg je ook de oorspronkelijke intentie van de maker, waarbij hij uitgaat van een verhaallijn binnen zijn producten. Maar of het uiteindelijke verhaal ook vooraf zo bedoeld is, is niet duidelijk en ook niet altijd aannemelijk. Het levert een interessante kijk op de karakters als toerist in Nederland, wat deden ze, waar gingen ze heen en met wie? Ter illustratie:
Foxy vos
- Het karakter Vos, genaamd Foxy, een man, komt in totaal 15 maal voor, dat staat in de top 5 van karakters. 3 maal komt deze alleen voor: Alleen een hoofd, verkleed als het melkmeisje van Vermeer en alleen wandelend door Amsterdam langs de kanalen in de nacht. De overige keren komt Foxy samen met andere karakters voor.
- Foxy woont/verblijft samen met andere karakters: Giraffe, Ijsbeer, Kikker, Leeuw, Paard, Struisvogel in een grachtenpand uit 1789. Dit is het hoofdkwartier van Mingface waar ze samen incheckten. De enige andere keer dat Vos niet met Pinguin Ping, een vrouw, voorkomt is in het Amsterdamse Bos. Dan zijn er vooral andere boskarakters aanwezig en is Foxy de enige hoofdpersoon. Hier is hij vooral als vos uitgebeeld. Deze kaart kun je ook zien als dat Foxy als hoofdkarakter alleen op een kaart verschijnt.
- 10 maal komt Foxy voor op een kaart samen met Ping, waarvan de helft, 5 maal alleen met elkaar. Foxy en Ping hebben duidelijk een bijzonder relatie. Samen eten ze in de nieuwe Markthal te Rotterdam. Ze zitten samen in een waterfiets op de kanalen in Utrecht. Ze zitten innig op een bootje bij de Magere Brug in Amsterdam (104 en 204) en samen hebben ze een drankje in een bruin café te Amsterdam.
- Met anderen zitten Foxy en Ping in een watertaxi op de Maas in Rotterdam (006), in een watertaxi te Amsterdam (112), in een grachtenboot bij het Rijksmuseum (120) zitten ze in een hop on hop off boot bij Nemo Science Museum (122) en zitten ze in een treintje bij het Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht (879).
- Foxy heeft duidelijk iets met water tijdens zijn bezoek aan Nederland. 1 maal verschijnt hij zelfs zelf als kapitein.

The combination of depth and movement effect makes the images even more appealing to the imagination. - Deze klassieke schoonheid van de bekende oude meester Vermeer hebben we in een eigentijdse versie voorzien van een knipoog. Door het bewegen van de kaart geeft het meisje een knipoog. Tevens verschijnt er op de achtergrond een patroon dat is geïnspireerd op het bekende Delfts blauw. - Meisje met de parel is een schilderij uit circa 1665-1667 van de Hollandse meester Johannes Vermeer. Het is uitgegroeid tot diens populairste schilderij. Meisje met de parel kwam in 1902 in het bezit van het Mauritshuis in Den Haag. - Het schilderij is geen portret, maar een tronie, een fantasiekop. De tulband werd nat-in-nat geschilderd en bevat tinten van een mix van loodwit en ultramarijn, met daaroverheen een ultramarijn-blauwe glacislaag. - De hoofdbedekking contrasteert met het bruinachtig gele jasje met de witte kraag. In het oog springt de 'parel', die geen parel is; een grootse creatie van glimlichten en schaduwen en rafelige randen. Met twee verfstreken gaf Vermeer linksboven een helder lichtaccent en onderaan een weerschijn van haar witte kraag. Gezien de grootte en de metalige weerkaatsing (geen lichtverstrooiing zoals bij een parel) is het eerder een glazen, gelakte 'druppeloorbel' dan een natuurlijke parel. Ook de modellen op Meisje met de rode hoed en Meisje met de fluit dragen dergelijke oorbellen. - Het lijkt alsof het meisje met haar onbevangen blik direct contact zoekt met de toeschouwer. The use of modern 3D technology gives the portrait a beautiful depth and because the image is made up of a detailed striped pattern, Vincent has a lively expression and the light 'dances' around Van Gogh, as it were. By moving the card Vicent gives a relativising wink. - Van Gogh painted this self-portrait in the winter of 1887-1888, when he had been living in Paris for almost two years. The work shows that he had studied the dotted technique of the pointillists and applied it in his own original way. The dashes of paint are placed in different directions.
